Redd Horrocks from UX Booth said, 《Dont Make Me Think》 is not only an excellent guide to user experience, but also can also inspire the readers in internet marketing. He summed up the 10 golden rules derived from the book, now I’d like to take this opportunity to record and share these 10 golden rules with you, wish you can be inspired.
1. What is the usability?
Usability is to ensure that the products or services you are promoting online is useful and an average person can use it independently.
2. Web pages and Network applications should be self-evident
When users view a page or use a web application, the page or the application should be very clear in spelling out its own without additional explanation.
3. Do not let me think
Nobody likes being in a complete daze, they feel embarrassed if they don’t know what to do. If the website designer did not design the site clear enough, the reputation of site and the provider will be hurt.
4. Do not waste my time.
Most sites are built to save consumers’ time. As a result, consumers become sharks. They have to finish what they want to do quickly on your site, otherwise they feel stilfed.
5. Users like the back button.
Different from “no use crying over spilt milk” in real life, people are always customary to use the back button when they are browsing the websites. They are happier if they only need to click one or two buttons to get back to the former pages. Back button is the most commonly used button in the Browser.
6. We are habitually being.
If we find something useful, we will always use it. Once we get used to this thing, no matter how bad it is, we are disinclined to look for alternatives.
When we have some setbacks to use a thing, we will gradually use it in a more optimal way, but we rarely take the initiative to find a better alternative.
7. No time to gossip.
Useless gossip may be helpful to you socially, but it can not help your site to win the users’ favor. Because users have no time to gossip, they want to go straight to the subject. You should do your best to eliminate unnecessary dialogue.
8. Do not throw away the “Search function”.
Most people are accustomed to search, they will always look for the search box the time they reach some website. Just like some people are accustomed to turn to the nearest shop assistant the time they enter a shop.
9. Sitemap is necessary
When the visitors browse a site, they always have no sense of the exact location, a sitemap can help them to find where they are and where to go, so as not to get lost on your site.
10. Make it easy to return to the home page
Place a link to homepage within the users’ sight will make them feel at ease. A link to Homepage can give the user a hint, no matter where they get lost, they can restart, just like a reset button or a bail card or a prop to the starting point of the maze in a computer game .
About the last one, I have a personal experience to tell. I’ve ever build an online Dictionary site for my friend, but he changed i: the hompage was changed from dictionary page to a comprehensive advisory page with a dictionary, the dictionary became a minor role, in addition, no Home button on navigation bar, the link to home was replaced by the “dictionary”, though when visitors click “dictionary”, they will be led to Homepage, but the “homepage” is more than a dictionary now, when click “dictionary”, visitors are imaging to be led to a dictionary page, but actually they are led to a comprehensive advisory page, they waste a lot of time to find the dictionary in a corner, they will surely feel very uncomfortable. This tells us the title of the link should be appropriate enough when we are planning the navigation bar.
